(Plesk for Linux) Virtuozzo ReadyKernel

To protect your Linux server against critical security flaws and vulnerabilities, you need to regularly install new kernel patches. The Virtuozzo ReadyKernel extension allows you to install patches on the fly without rebooting the server during or after the installation. The extension only installs the patches compatible with the kernel to avoid the risk of the server crashing, and can be configured to install patches automatically.

The Virtuozzo ReadyKernel extension supports the following operating systems:

  • CentOS 7
  • RedHat 7
  • Ubuntu 14
  • Ubuntu 16

Note: If you run Plesk inside of a commercial Virtuozzo container, you do not need the Virtuozzo ReadyKernel extension because kernel patches are installed on the hardware node level.

Kernel patches installation

Virtuozzo ReadyKernel is a freemium extension. If used for free, it only checks for availability of new available kernel patches and shows notifications about them in the Status tab of the extension UI.

You cannot install kernel patches using the free Virtuozzo ReadyKernel extension. Kernel patches installation is a paid feature.

To enable Virtuozzo ReadyKernel patches installation:

  1. Install the Virtuozzo ReadyKernel extension.
  2. If you are not a paid customer of Virtuozzo and VZLinux, purchase a license in the Plesk online store. You will receive the ReadyKernel activation code.
  3. Activate the ReadyKernel using the activation code.

Virtuozzo ReadyKernel allows you to install kernel patches either automatically or manually.

To always keep your kernel up-to-date, we recommend setting up automatic patches installation. The risks of doing so are minimal, because Virtuozzo ReadyKernel does not install patches incompatible with the kernel to ensure server stability.

To set up automatic patches installation:

  1. Go to Extensions > My Extensions > Virtuozzo ReadyKernel > Go To Extension.
  2. On the Settings tab, select the Automatically install updates when they become available radio button, and click OK.

If you want to check patches before their installation, you can install patches manually.

To install patches manually:

  1. Go to Extensions > My Extensions > Virtuozzo ReadyKernel > Go To Extension.
  2. On the Settings tab, select the Notify me when new updates are available radio button.
  3. Check for notifications on the Status tab. To see the available kernel updates, click More details about the available update.
  4. To install the update, click Install Now.
